Hello Brown Family and Friends!
As your new coach of Brown Women's Rugby Team I am excited to write to you about our progress so far this year. Hold your horses, this will be a long one. I know we won’t often score like this so I wanted to make sure credit was given
where due. The players have been working hard since the end of August and this match has shown the fruits of their labor.
What was supposed to be a sunny, warm day was initially a cloudy, drizzly beginning to the Brown Women’s Rugby match at Columbia. Our first points came at 1 minute in from an attack led by Alison Gale from a breakdown at the Columbia 40yd line in which she drew her defender wide and hit Lucy Fernandez on an inside scoot pass to score right in front of the posts. Lucy had a great kicking day and this would be just one of her many conversions. From then on the team was on fire and literally were scoring almost every 4-5 minutes. To be fair, Columbia was nowhere near as experienced as Brown but I was proud to see that Brown set the standard and did not play to the competition, rather elevated their performance.
As it’s unusual to have so many scores, I’m going to list the time and lead up to each of the scores:
4:48 Alison Gale creates a blindside attack to take the team down to the attaching 30yd which is then driven forward and recycled to Saskia Morgan who dodges several defenders to score under the posts. Conversion kick by Lucy Fernandez 14-0
7:42 Columbia possession is turned by our forwards on the Columbia 30yd line; Jacqueline Rice sees Columbia has left the post position open and immediately picks up the ball and drives straight to the posts, scoring in the center. Conversion kick by Lucy. 21-0
9:30 After driving the ball down to the Columbia 40yd line by a combination of offload passes between backs and forwards, ball is recycled quickly and Elisha Miles passes to Saskia Morgan who steps who defender and goes in for score. Conversion kick by Lucy. 28-0
15:09 Inner passing from the forwards downfield to the Columbia 15yd line; on the recycle Tiara Mack spies and open space next to the breakdown, picks up and drives to the score. Conversion kick by Lucy no good. 33-0
19:25 Brown forwards win Columbia scrum at the Columbia 40yd and Jessica Sawadogo picks and takes the ball blindside. Quick offload to Lucy Fernandez who drives forward and quickly recycles ball, which is snapped up by Elisha Miles who weaves through Columbia defenders for score. Conversion kick by Lucy. 40-0
21:53 Columbia kickoff recovered by Natalie Klotz who drives through Columbia defenders and recycles quickly. Ali Gale sends ball to Elisha Miles who crashes through Columbia defense and gives a great offload to Saskia Morgan who sprints in for the score. Conversion kick by Lucy. 47-0
29:11 Devastating tackle by Allison Hojsak coughs up the ball at the Columbia 50 yd and is scooped up by Saskia Morgan who evades cover defense for the score. Conversion kick by Lucy. 54-0
34:30 Ball squirts out of the back of the Columbia scrum at their 5yd line. Vigilant scrumhalf Ali Gale, picks up ball and dives over line for score. Conversion kick by Lucy no good. 59-0
40:00 Ball driven up field through a series of offloads and breakdowns by Brown forwards. At the Columbia 40 yd line, Elisha Miles breaks 2 tackles and evades Columbia fullback to score under posts. Conversion kick by Lucy. 66-0
By the second half, the skies had cleared and the sun was now out and along with it a change in temperature. However, Brown fitness still allowed the team to continue it’s domination:
42:30 Ball moved wide from Columbia scrum to Columbia outside center who gets tackled by Elisha Miles and she gets up, recovers ball and scores from the Columbia 30yd line. Conversion kick by Lucy 73-0
47:36 At the 50 yd line from Brown scrum, ball sent to backs who are stopped in midfield. Resulting breakdown ball is advanced from a scoot by Amber Reano to Lucy who offloads to supporters Jaqueline Rice to Jessica Sawadogo for the score. Conversion kick by Lucy. 80-0
53:30 Ball spilled in tackle by Columbia forward at the Columbia 30yd line. Quickly recovered by Amber Reano and sent to Elisha Miles streaking down the blindside for score. Conversion kick by Ebony McCaskill no good. 85-0 55:50 Clean ball from Brown scrum sent to backline. Individual effort by Elisha Miles to break several tackles while looking for offload and then deciding to go on her own for score. Conversion kick by Ebony no good. 90-0
59:00 Phase play to get Brown down to the Columbia 40yd line, moving ball from right side of field to 15yd sideline. Amber Reano spies lack of defense on weak side and decides to take ball and attack down the lane to a score. Conversion kick by Ebony no good. 95-0
75:00 Columbia scrum on Brown 5yd line. Possession turned over and taken downfield by Brown forwards to the Columbia 30yd line. No.8 Jess Sawadogo sees opportunity on weak side and calls for ball, evades defense and cuts back into the center to score under posts. Conversion kick by Ebony no good. 100-0
80:00 Brown held up in Columbia tryzone – scrum to Brown. Ball shoots out of Brown side of scrum and recovered by Jess Sawadogo who gets tackled. Amber Reano quickly scoops up ball placed by Jess into right corner for the score. Conversion kick by Ebony no good. 105- 0
While scoring puts us on the board, it is all the hard work of gaining and retaining possession that goes nameless in these types of reports. I am very proud of our team performance (as I hope you will be) and we will continue to make Brown a name to be noted not only in our conference but nationally. Though I have only been here a short time I know how important your support is to the Brown players, not only financially but emotionally as they look to see you when you are at a match. We hope to see more of you in the future and I look forward to meeting you all!
