Brown opened the Ivy Championships against a fired up Dartmouth team. Elisha Miles '15 opened the scoring 3 minutes into the match breaking 2 tackles and running 25 meters up the middle to score under the posts. Erica Florenz '13 converted and Brown was up 7-0. The Brown forwards kept the pace high and delivered some nice balls to scrumhalf Vanessa Munoz '13. Dartmouth was caught offsides 10 minutes in and Erica slotted a penalty kick to bring the score to 10-0. Minutes later Erica broke free off of the ensuing kick-off and recycle; she pushed 4 tacklers off and raced 20 meters for the score. She converted her own try and Brown was up 17-0. Brown was really clicking and the forwards were dominating the point of contact. Hooker Lucy Fernandez '14 took a nice scoot ball off #9 Vanessa and went in for the score, Brown 22-0. Dartmouth was throwing everything into the rucks but Brown was on the front foot, super scrumhalf Vanessa 'Nay' Munoz picked a ball off a ruck and raced 20 meters scoring in the corner. Erica converted the kick from a crazy angle and Brown was up 29-0. An anxious Dartmouth was caught offsides again and Erica hit another penalty to put Brown up 32-0. One of the best trys of the tournament came with minutes left in the half, flyhalf Michelle Vander Ploeg '13 ran a loop with #12 Erica Florenz with #13 Elisha dummy crashing freezing the Dartmouth defense. 'Ploeg found a gap outside took off, dishing to a streaking Saskia 'Kiki' Morgan '16 who raced in for the score and a 37-0 halftime lead.
Brown was able to substitute at the half and save some energy for the Sunday finals. Dartmouth came out hard determined to win some ball. They scored twice in the first 20 minutes of the half to bring the score to 37-10. But Bruno woke up and responded with 2 quick scores, captain Michelle Vander Ploeg took a quick penalty tap and outran the Dartmouth defense to score in the corner. Minutes later Kiki Morgan out ran the Dartmouth line to finish out the match 47-10 and set up a Sunday final with Princeton.
Princeton 22-Brown 17
Sunday Brown and Princeton played a defensive battle. Brown's Erica Florenz'13 opened the scoring benefiting from a team effort and a series of passes, Eflo scored in the corner to put Brown up 5-0. Both teams played stellar defense dishing out big hits and launching good defensive walls. The large Princeton scrum began to dominate the set and Princeton was able to put 3 scores on the board in the first half off scrums or ensuing rucks. Down 17-5 at the half Brown came out on fire and tied up the match. Flanker, Ariel 'Syd' Peak '15 stole a ball that squirted out the side of a ruck, Syd raced 20 meters in to score in the corner.Elisha Miles '15 was next to score picking up a dropped Princeton pass and racing 80 meters for to score under the posts, Erica Florenz converted and with less then 20 minutes to go the score was tied 17-17. With less then 5 minutes in the match Princeton drove into the Brown 10 and scored off a quick tap and the ensuing ruck. Brown mounted one last charge, fullback Kiki Morgan '16 found space down the line and looked to be free, a Princeton player made a diving tackle forcing Kiki out of bounds and ending the match. The Brown defense was amazing - and held the Princeton line to no breaks the entire match.
Brown was awarded an 'at large bid' to the national championships. Bruno travels to Annapolis to play the first 2 rounds of nationals. Brown will open against Mid-Atlantic champion Navy April 13.
