Reeling from our loss to Harvard, Brown traveled to Dartmouth ready to compete and improve upon our lackluster performance at home. However, the first minute proved a maddening start. From a Dartmouth kickoff the ball Brown took the ball to the defending 30 yard line where it was turned over by Dartmouth and recycled to quick attack. An ensuing offside penalty by Brown at the defending 22 yard line saw Dartmouth take a tap and pass to their fullback who outpaced defenders down the right side of the field. The conversion kick was no good and the score was now Brown 0 - Dartmouth 5 at one minute into the match.
Brown came back with tenacity and pressured Dartmouth heavily on the kickoff only to be penalized by the referee for another offside call at the Dartmouth defending 30 yard line. However, Brown continued to pressure Dartmouth and garnered a penalty inside the Dartmouth defending 22. Though unconverted, Brown continued to dominate the contact area with a quick recycle to Elena Suglia ‘15 who bounced the ball back into No. 8, Jess Sawadogo ‘14 for a 30 yard run to the Dartmouth 10 yard line. An unfortunate penalty saw Dartmouth kick out of trouble but in resulting play, Brown gained possession. A slow pass to Kiki Morgan caused her to be tackled by her opposite and turned over. Dartmouth flyhalf dodged several tackles to release her fullback for the score down the left side of the field at 18:00 minutes. The try unconverted, the score now stood at Brown 0 - Dartmouth 10.
In the 21st minute, Brown came back winning their own scrum in the Dartmouth 22 and No.8 Jess Sawadogo ‘14 drove up the field to contain Dartmouth defenders. The ball is recycled quickly by Brown forwards and Elena Suglia ‘15 sends a quick pass to Kiki Morgan ‘16 who slips through a defender’s hands to score under the posts. The try is converted by Lucy Fernandez ‘14 for a score of Brown 7-Dartmouth 10.
Possession was hotly contested back and forth until the 28th Dartmouth No.13 spun out of several tackles to make it down the left sideline and post the ball between the posts. With the conversion good, the score was now Brown 7-Dartmouth 17. However, in minute 31, a turnover in Dartmouth possession sees Lucy Fernandez ‘14 move a pass to Kiki Morgan ‘16 who eludes several tackles to again score under the posts. Lucy Fernandez ‘14 adds the conversion for a score of Brown 14-Dartmouth 17.
The kickoff return sees flyhalf Elena Suglia ‘15 break loose in the middle of the field only to have possession stolen in the resulting ruck. Ensuing play saw the ball change hands several times with ultimate possession coming from Jess Sawadogo ‘14 who kicks a mishandled Dartmouth ball that is later scooped up by Kiki Morgan ‘16 for a score in the right side corner. With the conversion kick no good, the score just before half stood at Brown 19 – Dartmouth 17. Two minutes minute, Brown comes back winning their own scrum in the Dartmouth minute when the left to go Dartmouth scores a try and converts for a half time score of Brown 19 – Dartmouth 22.
The second half opened with Brown still continuing to pressure for possession but missed tackles and a resulting sin bin for May Siu ‘15 saw Brown backed into their own 22 for at least ten minutes. To Brown’s credit, Dartmouth was not able to push their scrum even if having one less player. However, the constant recycling of Dartmouth possession soon saw a lapse in the defense leading to a score under the posts by the Dartmouth outside center. With a good conversion the score was now Brown 19 – Dartmouth 29.
With 15 minutes to go, Dartmouth commits a penalty inside their 22 just right of the post but Brown does not convert. Dartmouth touches down for a 22 but their kicker is ahead of the kick resulting in a scrum to Brown (should have been a penalty). Jess Sawadogo ‘14 picks from the base of the scrum and drives the ball 15 yards. Brown continues to recycle the possession until picked up by Zoe Downes ‘14 who, with the help of her teammates, drives over the Dartmouth line for 5 points, just right of the posts. With the conversion the score is now Brown 26 – Dartmouth 29.
The last 12 minutes saw Tiara Mack ‘16 sent to the sin bin for a professional foul and her teammates having to play without her for a good portion of the remaining time. However, neither team was able to score in the waning minutes leaving the final score Brown 26 – Dartmouth 29.
Brown B 36 - Dartmouth B 29
The Brown B-side maintained their undefeated record as they took on Dartmouth B's. The game was filled with lots of run with great support and offloads. The back line passed the ball out to wing Zoe Thompson who ran 40 meters, past Dartmouth's wing, and into the try zone. Conversion by Alison Gale. Flyhalf Monica Roth made a breakaway from center field but was tackled about 10 meters from the try zone. Hooker Alison Gale got an offload from Monica as she hit the ground and ran it in for the try. Conversion by Alison Gale. Dartmouth starting putting more pressure on Brown at this point and responded with a try of their own. After some back and forth play around center field, Monica got the ball again and this time ran down the sideline 50 yards for the score.
Lock Sofie Rudin make a nice 30 yard run and then passed to Wu Ka Ling before getting tackled. Scrumhalf Melodi Dincer grabbed the ball of the ruck and popped it to Cassie Sutten-Coats who ran it in for the try. Conversion by Alison Gale. Dartmouth responded to this increased pressure by putting put more tries in the second half. Zoe Thompson was able to get the ball around the outside a second time and touch it down for the score. At this point the score was 29-31 and both teams were fighting to win the game. Center Denisse Garcia-Villalpando picked the ball off of Wu Ka Ling who was just tackled. Denisse fought through three defenders to touch the ball down to end the game.
