Brown opens play Saturday April 13 at 1:00 against Mid-Atlantic Champions, Navy. The Annapolis Fields are beautiful - and we'd sure love to see you on the sidelines cheering.
We are a young, entertaining bunch. The team is led by seniors Michelle Vander Ploeg (MAT '13) and Vanessa 'Nay' Munoz. Nay and Ploeg have been playing crazy inspiring rugby, leading by example and the occasional bark. The front row features super sophomore Sandra Kimokoti at tight head and the heart of the team, Lucy Fernandez '14. We are still working out the loosehead sitch' butMay Siu '15, Saudi Garcia '14 and Ebony McCaskill '16 have each come in and done a good job. The locks, in true Brown tradition, are small but mighty, awesome Natalie Klotz '14 and Tiara Mack '16 can be found at the bottom of every ruck. The back row includes Alli ‘the spear' Hojsak at #8, Ariel 'Syd' Peak at 6 and an assortment at 7 (Saudi Garcia, Shadura Lee '16 and Ebony McCaskill '16) we hope to have the experience and hard hits of Mayrolin Garcia’13 back for the Navy match to match the tenacious and body sacrificing play of Syd.
'Nay Munoz '13 has taken on the duties of scrumhalf and has really given Brown a running threat from the base of the ruck or scrum. Like the great scrumhalves from past years (Blair, Yadi, Molly) she leads her forwards by throwing herself into every play and keeping folks urgent but not panicked. Nay is passing to 5th year senior 'Ploeg. Ploeg is a rock and the defensive hammer of the team - she never misses a hit and keeps a young and relatively inexperienced line disciplined and focused. Ploeg has taken some big hits this year and just pops up and moves on - she walked by me in Barus Hall yesterday with a massive black eye - must have scared her 4th grader class.
Ploeg passes to Erica 'Eflo' Florenz '13. Eflo is the foot of the team and her big goalie paws and accurate big boot have allowed us to play real attacking rugby. You've got to see her push off tacklers with her 20 foot wing span. Eflo passes to second year player Elisha Miles. The trainer, Mike P likes to call her the Bus (aka Jerome Bettis) she runs like a running back and hits like linebacker. Elisha is such fun to watch and I have to remind myself she is only a second year! The back triangle is young. Weakside wing is held down by Jasmine McAdams '16 a flash from FL. Jaz' is really an interesting player, she is slight, quick and very competitive - each week I watch her pick up something new - she has the speed to turn a corner and chase down line breaks. The 14 is a toss up with Elena Suglia '15 giving us a steady defensive pressure and tenacious running. TransferSophie Putka ’14 has been a pleasant surprise, she has some nice speed and is aggressive on the attack. The fullback is a true freshman, Saskia ‘Kiki’ Morgan. Kiki has been a bit of a league sensation - she is definitely one of the fastest players in the country. Kiki brings good field sense and a 'serious attitude' to defense. she shoulders a lot of responsibility which can be hard on a young player but she is the real deal and with the rest of the young players gives us a bright future.
