Losing in the first round of Ivy Championships put Brown into the position of having to beat Princeton to gain 2nd place and a chance to advance to the American College Rugby Association (ACRA) tournament at West Point, Nov 16-17, 2013.
While the loss to Harvard (26-7) was hard on the players, they were determined to rally to bring a better performance against Princeton.
Brown 26 - Princeton 12
Despite losing to Harvard in first round, Brown came out ready to compete with Princeton for the number 2 seed to advance to the American Rugby College Association (ACRA) Tournament.
Brown was the first to draw blood at 5:19 when hooker Lucy Fernandez ’14 took a tap from a penalty and hit Jessica Sawadogo ’14 on a run that saw her drive into the try zone for the first score. The conversion added by Lucy brought the score to Brown 7 – Princeton 0.
Princeton came back at the kickoff and proceeded to keep Brown inside their defending 50 for the next 15 minutes. However, a turnover possession on the Brown defending 30m by Saskia “Kiki” Morgan ’16 and continued on by Tiara Mack ’14 got Brown back on track and in attacking range 40m out from the Princeton line. Through a series of phases, Brown kept attacking but not quite getting into the tryzone. Our scrum was consistently handling Princeton and causing disorganization of their forwards. However a turnover of possession at the lineout lead to an attack by Princeton leading to a score just left of the posts at 41 minutes. Adding the conversion the halftime score stood at Brown 7 – Princeton 7.
Kicking off after the half, Brown came out determined to pressure Princeton and stayed in their half for the next 10 minutes until a Brown scrum at the Princeton defending 40m produced ball for No.8, Jessica Sawadogo ‘14 to run from the base, scoring just left of the posts. Lucienne “Lucy” Fernandez ’14 again adding the conversion to make the score now Brown 14 – Princeton 7.
Again, Princeton answered Brown’s score with one of their own at 61 minutes. But kicking from the far left of the field proved to hard so the score now remained at Brown 14 – Princeton 12. The rest of the match belonged to Brown. At 78 minutes, Jessica Sawadogo ’14 again scores from a penalty tap – score Brown 19 – Princeton 12. In the final minutes, scrumhalf Amber Reano ’16 picks the ball up from a ruck and attacks freeing Kiki Morgan who dodges several players to score between the posts. Lucy Fernandez adding the conversion, the final score Brown 26 – Princeton 12.
