The inaugural varsity Ivy match was on show today at Harvard Stadium. Both teams hoping to lay claim to the winning title saw Brown and Harvard battling furiously from the first whistle. Brown struck first 19:00 at the attacking 20m with inside center, Capt. Oksana Goretaya ’17 receiving hard won ball and picking a hole to score directly under the posts with Sofie Rudin ’17 converting starting the scoring at 7-0.
Even though the Brown scrum was driving Harvard back they were able to gather the ball and swing the ball to the blindside and come up with a try in the right corner. No conversion left the score at Brown 7-Harvard 5.
Brown was tenacious at the breakdown, contesting every tackle but got caught on an offside penalty and Harvard took a quick tap before Brown was organized and got around the edge to score in the left corner. With no conversion, the score was now Brown 7-Harvard 10. With seconds left in the first half Brown turned over a Harvard ball in the tackle and after a hard run by prop Elisha Miles ‘15, the ball made it’s way to Kiki Morgan ’16 who streaked into the try zone. Conversion attempt was no good and the whistle at half saw Brown 12 – Harvard 10.
In the second half Brown came out continuing their campaign of contesting every Harvard possession. However, at 56:16 deep in Brown’s 10m area a misdirected kick by the wing set up Harvard to take the ball in leaving the score at Brown 12-Harvard 15. Brown forwards doubled their efforts led by Capt. Tiara Mack ’16 and prop Daisy Alvarado-Munoz ’17 and began pounding at the edges of the rucks working to set up good possession for their backs. At 32:05 scrumhalf Amber Reano ’16 kept picking up and running until a seam opened up and she went through a ruck apparently unseen by anyone and scored in the middle of the posts. Conversion is made by Sofie Rudin ’17, Brown leading 19- Harvard 15!
Finally at 37:00, Brown turns over Harvard possession in a ruck and moves the ball to Oksana Goretaya ’17 who takes off down the sideline with Kiki Morgan ’16 in tow. Just when it looked like the defender was going to tackle Oksana, Kiki called a switch back inside and ran into the try zone untouched. With no conversion the score stood at Brown 24-Harvard 15. With minutes left Brown kept knocking but could not get into the goal so at the final whistle, the score remained Brown 24 – Harvard 15.
